SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) youth wing questioned People’s Democratic Front (PDF) chairman, P N Syiem and other MDCs on their efforts made to make laws for the betterment of the indigenous tribes of the state in the district council.

In a statement issued here, president of the youth wing of KHNAM, Thomas Passah, asserted that till date there had been no laws to ensure that only indigenous people of the state could have voting rights in the Council elections.

It may be mentioned that KHNAM has time and again raised the issue of amendment to Rule 128 of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils), Rules, 1951, to prevent non-tribals from taking part in the district council elections.

With the state going to the polls in just a few months, Passah argued that people could bring about a change if they were willing to replace the sitting legislators with new ones.
