SHILLONG: Farmers in Meghalaya can reap benefits by following the old system of organic farming and applying today’s clean technology, the Meghalaya State Planning Board has observed.
A number of issues were raised during the recent meeting that focused on the state’s Mission Organic. One was the import of huge quantity of dung from cattle fed with “chemically infected feeds” and the same cow dung infects the produce of the soil in Meghalaya. The Board encouraged farmers to raise cattle.
At the meeting chaired by John F Kharshiing, officials of the Horticulture and Agriculture Department said the state has targeted 40,000 hectares for organic farming.
