SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has said a series of development initiatives, including completion of Shillong bypass, four-laning of road from Jorabat to Umiam and the Shillong-Tura road, among others were possible thanks to his intervention.
The political opponents had termed Sangma as “CM of Ampati” for taking away several schemes to his constituency.
Another charge made by the rebel legislators who had switched over to NPP was that Sangma was a dictator.
The chief minister, however, narrated a series of initiatives by his government to substantiate that he was working for the whole state.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the chief minister said he was surprised at people calling him dictator since his sole intention was to look after the interest of the state and ensure speedy implementation of pending projects.
He also said his government improved law and order in the entire Garo Hills region over the last seven years hinting that he did not deserve to be called the “CM of Ampati”.
Commenting on the improvement in Ampati, the chief minister said in the past, several hours were taken to reach Ampati from Tura whereas after the improvement of road, it takes only 45 minutes to reach the destination.“Narendra Modi and others who criticise should come and see the ground reality,” he said.
Rebels created instability
The chief minister said the rebel legislators, including Prestone Tynsong, used to create instability by trying to topple government and if it was not possible, they resorted to extortion or the tactic of bargaining for cabinet berths and other personal needs. “They are masters in this, but they did not succeed in toppling the government,” he added.
Sangma also downplayed the allegation that he was handling 18 portfolios as alleged by Tynsong and said that after downsizing the cabinet, other ministers were also holding at least seven departments.
“Some departments like cabinet affairs and political departments are often held by the chief minister and they cannot be given to others, he said.
