MAWKYRWAT: The Congress party in Mawkyrwat Constituency, South West Khasi Hills District, suffered another blow when a senior leader, who was the president of the Primary Unit, Stolin Dkhar along with his supporters left the party and joined the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) to support Renik L. Tongkhar in the upcoming elections.
Dkhar who joined the Congress in 1983 together with Rowell Lyngdoh, ex-MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister, was one of the senior-most leaders of the Congress in the Constituency. Since joining the party, he was active and worked hard to strengthen the party from time to time.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Dkhar said that he has decided to resign from the party because there was no unity among the leaders and the party workers. He also said that these differences have badly affected the party especially in the run-up to the next elections.
Dkhar also said that after assessing the situation, he and his supporters had decided to resign from the party and join the HSPDP to give support to Tongkhar.
It may be mentioned that recently, the president of the South West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee (SWKHDCC) and Ranikor MDC, Manstudy Nongrem and many leaders have decided to quit the party to give support to Tongkhar due to differences within the party.
With the joining of many leaders, the HSPDP hopes that it will secure Mawkyrwat seat.
