SHILLONG: The Congress, which is in disarray as some of its leaders are staring at prison term and others are preparing to quit, will not come back to power, said UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh on Monday.
Addressing a gathering at the UDP-HSPDP alliance’s first election rally in Mawlai, Lyngdoh reiterated that the Congress failed to live up to the voters’ expectations despite ruling the state for several years.
HSPDP chief and Nongkrem legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit warned the electorate in Mawlai against cash for vote.
“We need to be careful as electing a legislator is like searching for a life partner and if one makes mistake then it will be a lifetime of miseries,” the HSPDP chief said.
The alliance’s candidate from Mawlai is MLA Embhahlang Syiemlieh. Though regional alliances had fallen through in the past, the UDP-HSPDP alliance in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region is seen a step towards a “possible unification of the regional forces in the state”, Basaiawmoit asserted.
He pointed out that the aim of the regional alliance is to root out corruption. “Under the Congress-led government, all contract works are being done by the MLAs themselves and therefore contractors are being deprived of their share,” he alleged.
Syiemlieh denounced the government’s festival fervour that has burdened the exchequer and lashed out at Congress MDC PT Sawkmie for calling the UDP legislator “inexperienced”.
