NONGSTOIN: The district administration of West Khasi Hills is the first in the North-East to provide access to sanitary toilets in public places and along the national highway which is funded by the Swacch Bharat Mission.
Premium prefabricated modular Tata Steel toilets have been installed along the national highways and tourist locations.
Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills, Arun Kumar Kembhavi said two toilets have been completed, one in Markasa and the other in Kynshi Bangla. These toilets have world class facilities, a robust and insulated steel superstructure, concealed plumbing, four-side ventilation, provision for overhead water tank, handwash basin, ramp for the differently-abled and tiles.
Further, they also incorporate twin pit technology which will help turn human faeces into safe manure after six months.
Kembhavi said the initiative is in line with the government’s agenda of providing access to safe sanitation to all, especially women, and check open defecation and urination.
“I am proud to announce that this is the first time in the North-East that premium colourful toilets are being installed in public places. We are planning to install them in all parts of West Khasi Hills district like weekly markets, football grounds, churches, schools and colleges or wherever there is a congregation of people,” the DC said, adding that interested villages have been advised to get in touch with the DC office. Villages need to enter into an agreement for maintenance of the toilets. Collection of user charges is mandatory under the agreement.
