Babadam (North Tura): The National People’s Party (NPP), the main opposition to take on the ruling Congress in Garo Hills, has accused its bête noire of making false promises to the electorate by showcasing a string of foundation laying ceremonies to establish the government’s seriousness towards infrastructure development though there is no new infrastructure and funding for the same.
The NPP’s national president and Tura Lok Sabha MP, Conrad K. Sangma, during a campaign in the interior Babadam area of North Tura constituency in West Garo Hills district on Saturday, lashed out at the Congress and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for not providing necessary infrastructure for its functioning.
The young NPP leader was in the area to drum up support for former Rajya Sabha MP Thomas A. Sangma, who is contesting from North Tura.
Holding close to a dozen political meetings at different villages of Babadam area, the Tura MP interacted with villagers to get a first hand awareness of the difficulties faced by them, even as he made an assurance to try and find a solution to their problems.
Conrad expressed optimism that the people of Garo Hills would vote on the lines of the “wave” currently taking place in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region. He said that it is a ‘Tsunami’ wave against the Congress and the NPP would emerge victorious because many top Congress leaders have withdrawn from the contest fearing total defeat at the hands of NPP.
He ridiculed the Mukul Sangma government for a number of inaugurations, including establishment of new police stations and block development offices. “The government has not even increased the manpower and there is no new infrastructure to facilitate
functioning of such offices,” he said, while questioning sincerity of the government to initiate development.
Terming the last minute inaugurations and foundation laying ceremonies by the Congress as nothing but an attempt to lure the public, the Tura MP hit out at the Congress for branding the NPP and the BJP as parties working against the minorities.
“I am a Christian and our party the NPP will never remain silent if there is an attempt by anybody to hurt the sentiments of the minorities. We will always fight for the rights of the minorities,” said Conrad Sangma. He warned the electorate against getting carried away by the misinformation campaign of different political parties.
“For the development of Garo Hills and Meghalaya, if we have to partner with other political parties for the greater interest we will have to do, but we will never betray our people,” warned Conrad Sangma.
Drumming up support for party candidate Thomas Sangma, the NPP chief was all praise for his party candidate.
“Our late leader knew that he (Thomas Sangma) had the potential which was the reason that he was chosen to represent Meghalaya in the Rajya Sabha”, he said, while urging the people of Babadam area to strengthened the party by electing him in the upcoming election.
Thomas Sangma drew the attention by speaking on issues particular education and employment of the youth. ”I love our people and do not want to see our people left behind. We have to grow and catch up with the rest of the world. In the changing era, the people of Garo Hills can’t be far behind,” he said while seeking the mandate of the people to elect him.
