SHILLONG : The Meghalaya Liberation Association of Visually Impaired (MLAVI) raised concern on the attitude of the society towards persons with disabilities (PWDs) who often call them differently abled.

Speaking to reporters, president of the association, Elkin Rynniaw said, “The society often looks down upon us by calling us blind, deaf which affects us psychologically. According to us, to call us differently abled is disrespectful to us.”

He added that it affects their mentality which often discourages them to pursue further education and other works as the word “differently disabled” is synonymous to being called “unintelligent”.

Rynniaw said, “People in the society should be mature and not call us blind, deaf etc.”
