SHILLONG: The National People’s Party lost a district level leader and several supporters to the Congress on Friday for allegedly having “close links” with the saffron party.
NPP’s former East Khasi Hills district vice-president Harkin Warjri, who along with his supporters joined the Congress from Mawkynrew block, said, “Both NPP and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) have close links with the BJP.”
He contended that both parties cannot form the government that will eventually make them turn to the BJP to help form the government since they are against the Congress.
Warjri was addressing a gathering at Congress Bhavan in the city on Friday.
Criticising the BJP, Warjri raised the case of Paul Msiza, the President of the Baptist World Alliance who was denied visa, and said the incident underlined the BJP’s anti-Christian attitude. “This is a sign that as a Christian I should wake up,” he added.
Later, speaking to reporters, he said NPP is not a party for the poor and termed it as “No Parking Party” for the poor. Warjri slammed the former MLA of Mawkynrew, Remington Pyngrope, for not raising issues in the Assembly even after 10 years of being elected.
Meanwhile, the All India Congress Committee coordinator, Netta D’Souza, said the people have taken a wise decision at the right time that will make a lot of difference in the election.
She went on to add that the country is going through a tough time with the BJP-led central government increasing prices of commodities.
Pushing for unity in the Congress, D’Souza said, “The Congress is family and we will always be united.”
