After poll candidate’s killing, EC observers assess security scene in Garo hills

TURA: In the wake of the dastardly killing of NCP candidate from Williamnagar, Jonathone N Sangma by suspected GNLA militants on Sunday night Police Observer  of the Election Commission of India (ECI) for West Garo Hills, Bhavana Saxena along with General Observer Harjeet Singh on Tuesday reviewed the law and order situation in the district with all the political parties and contesting candidates at Circuit House in Tura.

Saxena while reviewing the situation in terms of security informed the poll candidates and their agents that the election machinery was doing its best to monitor the present situation  by connecting with more intelligence inputs and  that it was also in touch with the Border Security Forces (BSF) with regard to movement of militants in border areas. She requested the candidates to give information immediately if there was any threat or suspicious movement in their respective areas.

West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Dr M G R Kumar assured that he was committed to look upon the concerns of the candidates and also to provide security personnel to all the candidates in the district.

West Garo Hills District Election Officer, Ram Singh said that the meeting was held in order to reassess any threat to the candidates of the district and informed that the administration has intensified area domination, patrolling, checking of vehicles amongst others and urge them to cooperate for conducting free and fair election in the district.

During the meeting, candidates and their agents also placed their request for additional security while highlighting a few sensitive polling stations in their respective constituencies.
