SONGSAK: In the wake of Williamnagar NCP candidate Jonathan Sangma’s brutal killing on Sunday, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, accusing the ruling Congress of failing to curb lawlessness.
Addressing a public rally on Monday while campaigning for the BJP’s candidates in the three constituencies — Thomas Marak from Songsak, Rikman Momin from Rongjeng and Santosh Marak from Williamnagar – Singh said, “It is very sad to learn about the death of a contesting NCP candidate and three others in a blast triggered by suspected GNLC rebels. I pay homage to the deceased.”
“In Meghalaya there is no law and order. Where there is lawlessness how can development take place?” asked Singh while targeting the Congress government of perpetuating underdevelopment in the state.
“The people of Meghalaya elected the Congress six times but in return they got little or nothing,” he said.
Highlighting the BJP’s slew of development policies for the state, Singh said that if voted to power, the BJP would ensure drinking water potability, cheap electricity for every household and proper roads in villages.
“I assure you that if the BJP is elected in Meghalaya we will fulfill our promises within 2 years,” he claimed.
Targeting Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, the home minister questioned the CM’s ability to provide health facilities.
“The CM is a doctor but the people of the state living in the border belt have to carry their sick family members to Bangladesh for treatment due to lack of facilities in their own state,” he maintained.
Singh cautioned that the health scheme of Rs 5 Lakh announced by PM Modi for the poor in the Union budget this year would not be released by the Congress if it returned to power in Meghalaya and appealed to the electorate to vote for the BJP.
The Union minister also promised a CBI probe into scams allegedly committed by the Congress government.
“Meghalaya is an abode of clouds and development will rain down on it if the BJP comes to power,” he said, adding that the NGT ban on rat hole mining in the state was an issue the BJP was seriously concerned about and the party would work to bring transparency in the mining sector to put an end to unscientific extraction of coal.
The home minister addressed another rally at Law College ground in Tura on Monday that witnessed a large gathering of BJP supporters and sympathisers.
