SHILLONG: UDP MLA from Khliehriat Kyrmen Shylla became the youngest minister in the NPP-led Cabinet on Tuesday.
Shylla, who is 29 years old, was sworn in as a Cabinet minister by Governor Ganga Prasad at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.
The minister, who is a matriculate, defeated BJP’s Justine Dkhar by the highest margin of 8,181 votes.
Speaking to media persons, the youngest minister said he was excited to go out and perform for the people and the state.
“I will also take guidance from elders. I will give my best shot,” he said, adding that he would push for a comprehensive youth policy.
When asked about his priorities for the development of Jaintia Hills, Shylla said the people in Jaintia Hills need change on all fronts.
To a query, Shylla, who was a greenhorn, said it was owing to the love of the people that he was elected.
The minister admitted that the issues related to ban on coal mining needed to be addressed at the earliest.
Shylla is the sixth among 14 siblings. His father, Kor Sympli, was an MDC in 1999.
