SHILLONG: A delegation of the Shillong Bar Association on Tuesday met Home Minister James Sangma and urged him to appoint the new advocate general from the state.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to the minister saying an advocate general should not be from outside Meghalaya as a local will be in a better position to advise the government in all matters. The memorandum submitted by the Secretary of the Shillong Bar Association, Kishore Ch Gautam, lamented that the previous government while making the appointment chose to ignore the members of the Bar Association and preferred to appoint an advocate who was neither a domicile from Meghalaya nor a regular practitioner in the courts of the state. “Though appointment of Advocate General is the prerogative of the government, such appointments from outside the state does hurt the sentiment of the members of the Shillong Bar Association and the legal fraternity based in the state and we have no dearth of competent legal professionals who can advise the Government on all matters,” the petition said.
