SHILLONG: On March 18, the body of a man in his 40’s was found lying on the footpath opposite Civil Hospital, Shillong. Legal formalities have been observed and the body has been sent to SDM&HO Civil Hospital for postmortem. The body is kept at Civil Hospital Morgue Room for identification. He had a wheatish complexion with a long face shape, height is around 5’6″ with a long grey beard and moustache. He was wearing a blue t-shirt, black jacket and had a multicolour blanket. Few of his teeth were also missing. Those who can identify the deceased are requested to contact the following phone numbers for collection of body immediately. International seminar
SHILLONG: The department of political science, NEHU, will organise an international seminar under the UGC SAP on ‘’Northeast India and its international neighbors : New directions’’ on March 27 and 28 at the Old Guest House Complex, NEHUcampus, Shillong. Prof Mahendra Lama from JNU will be delivering the keynote address while scholars from across the country ad also from Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and Nepal will also be presenting papers on the two-day long event.

SHILLONG: A one-day Hindi workshop was organised for the employees of NEEPCO with faculty assistance of Dr. BijendraSingh,Regional Director,Central Institute of Hindi, RegionalCentre, Shillong at North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd.(NEEPCO), Corporate Office, Shillong on Monday.
Arson, destruction of property
SHILLONG: Miscreants in West Khasi Hills set fire to a temporary shed constructed for the purpose of static surveillance or ‘naka’ duty. Police said that on March 23 night, miscreants set fire to the shed of the District Police at Sohpian. As a result, the shed was partially damaged. In another incident, miscreants broke into the Itshyrwat Forest Beat Office, Shillong and burn office items. Donlang Walle War, Range Forest Officer, i/c Shillong North Range lodged a complaint that on March 23 night, miscreants broke into the Forest Beat Office and burnt chairs and curtains, broke the windowpanes, damaged the electrical wiring and also stole office materials.
Roads, health centres on NGH development body’s list
SHILLONG: The members of the District Development Steering Committee (DDSC) North Garo Hills met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and submitted a memorandum concerning the important and immediate needs of the people of North Garo Hills. In the memorandum, the DDSC told the chief minister to take up important roads, including the construction of double lane road from Damra to Berubari (Bajengdoba), connecting railway station at Mendipathar and district headquarters, Resubelpara, besides speeding the improvement and the black topping of existing PWD road from Dekhachang (Resubelpara) to Rongrong and from Damebibra to Dingok (Bajengdoba) The committee also asked the chief minister to Upgrade Mendipathar Deficit College into a government college which can ensure quality education to students, besides speeding up the setting up of the Jawaharlal Navodya Vidyalaya School (JNV). The committee also lamented that construction works of the 100-bed Civil Hospital at Chidaret and upgrading of primary health centre at Dainandubi, Bajengdoba, Kharkhutta and Mendipathar to community health centres.
Financial inclusion awareness

MAWKYRWAT: A financial literacy workshop was held at Nonglang village here on Monday as part of the financial inclusion programme of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The participants were briefed on the roles and functions of RBI, grievance-redressal mechanism in banking, precautionary measures that one ought to take to prevent financial frauds and a way forward towards a cashless economy. Representatives from the state government and commercial banks operating in the area and senior officials from RBI Shillong attended the workshop. Additional Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills W Biam urged participants to open bank accounts for availing of benefits under various government schemes.
MEPA writes to CM over dues
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Editors & Publishers Association (MEPA), in its letter to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed discontentment over non-payment of advertisement bills by different State Government departments. These advertisement bills have been lying unpaid for many years in departments such as PWD, Tourism, Police, DIPR and others. MEPA urged the new chief minister to initiate immediate action for payment of these bills within this financial year. MEPA is also planning to meet the chief minister and discuss problems faced by local publishing houses.
