One dies as vehicle overturns
NONGSTOIN: One person died in an accident at Nongshillong where a Tata sumo overturned. The incident occurred on Wednesday around 9.45 am when the vehicle bearing registration number ML05 J 9327 driven by Reinborlang Shianglong (18) from Synia Mawdoh capsized at Nongshillong NH 44E Nongstoin-Shillong road. The vehicle was coming from Synia Mawdoh and proceeding towards Mawriangtynnai. The driver fled from the spot after the incident. Sources have confirmed that one person died on the way to Civil Hospital Shillong.

Eye care center soon in EJH
SHILLONG: Mission for Vision (MFV) in association with Vistex Foundation, Bansara Eye Care Centre (BECC) and Society for Promotion of Eye Care & Sight (SPECS) will launch a new Vision Centre at Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills as part of a community-based eye care project. The intervention will include reaching out to 6,000 people including 3,600 children; conduct 48 eye camps; 24 school eye screenings; spreading awareness to 9,600 people about eye health and help conduct over 200 surgeriesin the East Jaintia Hills district.

KSU supports CBSE syllabus
SHILLONG: The KSU expressed happiness over the decision of the state government to adopt CBSE syllabus and lauded the Education Minister, Lakmen Rymbui for taking the initiative to bring about a change in the educational system. The union in a statement said the move will help students in competitive examinations which include AIEEEW/JEE, AIMPT/NEET, CAT, CSE. The union also congratulated Monjurlang L. Suchiang who bagged two gold medals from the University of Mysore in Master of Law (LLM).

Essential oil distillation unit installed at Ri Bhoi
NONGSTOIN: A distillation unit sponsored by Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) for extracting essential oil from aromatic plants was installed at the local business incubator located at the ARCS office, Nongstoin which is run by the Basin Development Unit West Khasi Hills during a three-day skill development programme in Ri Bhoi District on Wednesday. The event which focuses on cultivation, primary processing and marketing of economically important aromatic plants, suitable for NER under CSIR-Aroma Mission started on Tuesday where a team of 15 senior scientists and senior officers from CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow, IIIM, Jammu, CSIR-IHBT, Palampur and CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat attended the event. About 45 local farmers benefitted from the training.

School function
SHILLONG: Hill View Secondary School, ARC, Happy Valley, Shillong conducted an investiture ceremony on Wednesday where Major Geeta Mishra attended as the guest of honour. The principal, Arpita Majumdar administered oath to the student council and also gave away badges and sashes to the young leaders. In her address, the principal congratulated the newly appointed captain.

MLCU holds seminar on livelihood
SHILLONG: As part of the Martin Luther Christian University’s   endeavour to contribute to the rural community, the Department of Management and Commerce Studies on Wednesday organised a one day seminar on the theme ‘Sustainable Livelihood’, in the university campus. Speaking during the seminar, Adrian Marbaniang, Director NERCORMP gave a brief presentation on the different experiences and initiatives on sustainable livelihood. Wanphai Nongrum, Founder and Creative Director, Path to Creation said people should be aware of various sustainable resources available in the region.

PwDs meet CM over jobs quota, other demands
SHILLONG: The Khasi Disabilities Association (KDA) has asked Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to fully implement the 4 per cent job reservation policy for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). The Centre announced the job reservation through the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in 2016. A delegation met Sangma on Wednesday and submitted a charter of demands, building infrastructure for the disabled people, seeking his intervention. The chief minister assured them that he would prioritise redressing their grievances. Sangma has called for a joint meeting of the organisation and officials of the departments concerned and the social welfare minister after the Budget session next month.
