KSU locks microfinance office on Good Friday
SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union locked the office of Ujjivan Microfinance Bank at Jeep Stand, Motphran, as it did not pay heed to the pressure group’s demand for holiday on Good Friday.
According to a press communiqué by the union, the office was shut from outside whereas the staff were working inside.
However, some people got suspicious and complained to the union.
KSU warned the authorities of the bank to conform to the societal norms of the Hynniewtrep people or they would be chased out of the land.
Coal-laden trucks
without challans seized
SHILLONG: Fully loaded coal trucks having no challans were detected by the police on Saturday.
The police detained the trucks at Diengpasoh police station following an FIR filed by CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing.
Earlier, many trucks were detained in Ri Bhoi district. Sources said that following action by the Ri Bhoi district administration, the drivers hid the coal laden trucks in a toll gate at Mawkhanu and all along the bypass from Mawryngkneng.
Festival of Womanhood celebrated
SHILLONG: The Women Cell of Lady Keane College celebrated the Festival of Womanhood recently as part of International Women’s Day in honour of women street hawkers who are the real grassroot entrepreneurs who work under challenging circumstances to earn their livelihood to support their families.
The highlights of the festival was food stalls set up by street hawkers, a self- defence skills demonstration by Happy Red rooster MMA, a musical treat by all female band, Haystack Ladies, photography exhibition of the hawkers and a signature campaign.
The festival was opened by the Principal Lady Keane College, C Massar and Chairperson, Women’s Right Commission, Theilin Phanbuh. Some of the women hawkers , Phidashisha and Sruti remarked that they were humbled by such a grand arrangement made for them and that they were grateful that they could sell their products. Mock exercise conducted at Marba Hub
Shillong: With a number of hotels coming up in Police Bazar, a mock drill was held on Saturday to prepare hotel owners and staff for emergencies.
According to a statement by the government, the District Administration and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills, conducted a mock drill on disaster management at Marba Hub in Police Bazar to inculcate a culture of preparedness among the community.
The drill was carried out according to the incident response system (IRS), a mechanism which responds through a well conceived team consisting of the incident commander and teams from the operation, planning and logistic sections which fall under the control and command of the deputy commissioner of the district. Personnel from police, health, civil defence, home guard, PWD, fire and emergency services, information and public relations, power, EMRI 108 participated.
House gutted
Shillong: On March 30, in the village of Wah Rahaw, Mawphlang, the house of K. Nongrang was gutted. “Enquiry will have to be submitted by the BDO. The details will be awaited,” an official said.
