SHILLONG: The by-election to the Williamnagar Assembly constituency will be held on April 27, the Election Commission (EC) announced on Monday.
The election to the seat was postponed after NCP candidate Jonathone Sangma was killed in an IED blast while returning from a village after campaigning on February 18.
NCP is fielding Sangma’s wife Krinilla Marak.
The last date for filing nomination by the NCP candidate is April 10 and the date for scrutiny is April 11. The last date for withdrawal of the nomination is April 13.
Polling will be from 7am to 4pm on April 27. The counting will start at 8am on May 1.
The eight candidates who had already filed their papers are Marcuise N Marak (NPP), Deborah C Marak (Congress), Mahamsing M Sangma (UDP), Santosh R Marak (BJP), and independents Sengbath R Marak, Lahatson N Marak, Siljong R Marak and Jan N Arengh.
Williamnagar, which has 32,021 voters (16,567 male and 15,454 female), was represented by Deborah.
Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer Frederick R Kharkongor said no date has been announced for the by-poll in Ampati.
The CEO added that since only one candidate (NCP) has to file the nomination paper, the EC wanted to hold the Williamnagar by-poll early and not with Ampati.
“For Ampati, all the contesting candidates will have to file their nominations and the by-poll for this constituency will be announced at a later stage,” the official added.
