SHILLONG: The Traffic Branch of East Khasi Hills police was seen in a new avatar for educating the pedestrians and motorists about the use of the zebra crossing.
During the last few weeks, traffic police personnel assisted by students drawn from various institutions led by Shamakami sensitised the public on the importance of the zebra crossing in different parts of the city.
This was not only confined to the general public but also for the student communities of different schools and colleges and their parents as well.
Leaflets containing the DOs and DONTs for the pedestrians and motorists were distributed.
The exercise was the outcome of the order passed by the Meghalaya High Court based on the PIL filed wherein, PWD was asked to put zebra crossing markings in the areas identified and the police department to create awareness on the matter.
To ensure that the message reaches all people, the traffic department has also written to Doordarshan, All India Radio, Red FM and DIPR to spread the message through their sources.
The purpose is also to ensure that the message is followed up by the police personnel, the OCs and ICs of police stations, beat houses, out-posts and the police reserve.
To spread more awareness among the line wings of the department of police, the matter has been taken up with the police head quarters to pass necessary instructions.
Davis Marak, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, while speaking on the matter, urged all to make use of the zebra crossing which is a new concept in the state, which will go a long way in reducing the fatal accidents on the roads of Shillong.
“The motorists need to understand the rights of the pedestrians and should assist them while they cross roads by slowing down their vehicles,” the SP said.
He also appreciated the students from Martin Luther Christian University, St. Edmunds College, Indian Institute of Professional Studies, Women’s College, RHAM led by Rebina Subba and Samanda Phanwar from Shamakami NGO and all traffic personnel led from the front by B.J. Laloo, Superintendent of Police(Traffic), East Khasi Hills, to help spreading the message of awareness in the city.
