SHILLONG: The A-Chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) has petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday, asking him to upgrade the Phukan Memorial College located in Dalu, West Garo Hills.
The NGO in a petition to the chief minister said that the college infrastructure like water facilities, building structures, maintenance of playground and others, the teaching staff and the students requires timely upgradation. “The infrastructure lies in miserable state, the teaching and non-teaching staff are inadequately paid for their services and the college authorities have to run the college with minimum fund through monthly fees which falls way short of the minimum requirement for imparting standard and quality education,” the petition said.
According to AIJIF, the college earlier used to receive a lump sum grant in aid from the Director of Higher and Technical Education, for a period from July 4, 2005 to May 26, 2016 which has been stopped and this has aggravated the situation and made it much difficult to sustain the cost of quality education.
“It is required on the part of the state government to discuss the matter in the Assembly or in a cabinet meeting and seek a way to assist the college to provide better education,” the memorandum added.
