SHILLONG: As many as 30 shops in Lumdiengjri and Upper Mawprem were shut down here as they were running without trading licence from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
The checking of trading licence was conducted by activists of the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) East Khasi Hills Unit.
Speaking to reporters, FKJGP president Elton Warjri said most of the shops which were closed down have failed to renew their trading licences.
Informing that the organisation would also conduct similar checking in other parts of the city, Warjri said they would meet KHADC chief PN Syiem for his intervention in checking illegal trading.
Earlier, the police tried to stop FKJGP members from conducting the checking as they have not got KHADC’s permission.
FKJGP, however, decided to continue with the raids after the Executive Member in-charge of Trade, Neil Antonio War, who on being requested, refused to deploy his enforcement officials.
