Mindset needs to change for protection of women, children: Conrad

SHILLONGChief Minister Conrad Sangma observed that the society needed to change their mindset when it came to safety and security of women and children in the state.

Replying to the debate on Governor’s address on Friday, he called for joint efforts of the society as a whole to tackle crimes against women.

Stating that infrastructure is important, he said, “It is the mindset that we have to change and it is not just the government but the society as a whole to participate. If the mindset changes, I can assure you that we do not need so many laws although they are required but the mindset is the most important part.”

He added that there should be efforts made by the Government, NGOs and pointed that awareness camps and meetings need to be held to ensure women get respect.

Sangma said a number of measures had been taken by the government to ensure safety and security to women and children, which included setting up of women helpline, 181, there is also the anti-human trafficking units (AHTUs) set up in 2010 in four districts: Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, West Khasi Hills.

He added that women police stations had been set in 7 districts and there were proposals for creation of more women police stations in four  districts, which is consideration by the government.

As for the Forensic Science Laboratory, Sangma informed that there was an Inspector in the Forensic Science Laboratory, having adequate technical qualifications of BE as well as another sub-inspector.
