TURA: The scrutiny of the nomination paper filed by NCP candidate, Krinilla Marak passed off without a hitch on Wednesday with the returning officer clearing all papers and making Marak eligible to contest the elections.

Besides Krinilla, nine other candidates are contesting for the Williamnagar seat of whom include, Congress’ Deborah C Marak, NPP’s Marcuise N Marak, Mahamsing M Sangma of the UDP, Santhos R Marak of the BJP and four independents- Jan N Arengh, Lahatson N Marak, Sengbath R Marak and Siljong R Marak.

It will be interesting to see who the voters will elect as their representative given that so much drama has taken place in the run up to the elections.

While Williamnagar is a stronghold of Congress’ Deborah C Marak who has held it for consecutive terms, Krinilla, who is the widow of Late Jonathone N Sangma, who was killed in an IED blast triggered by the GNLA, days before the election, may also gain the upper hand by way of sympathy votes.

With talk of change doing the rounds and NPP already proving it’s might in other constituencies, coupled with the fact that people might want to vote for someone belonging to the ruling party, the party may also be able to turn the tide in its favour, ensuring a win for its party candidate, Marcuise N Marak.

Other candidates in the fray Mahamsing M Sangma of the UDP and BJP’s Santosh R Marak also cannot be overlooked given their strong social standing, as well as the four independents who could play a role in vote share.

With all that being said, the poll battle in Williamnagar is expected to be a well fought one, and who the people choose as their representative will only be known once voting takes place on April 27, and the process of counting is completed on May 1.
