TURA: An organization from North Garo Hills, the A’chik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) has alleged that a piggery unit under Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department in Koinabhui-II village of Barengapara area in West Garo Hills is posing serious health hazard to people residing in the locality.

In their complaint to the Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, the forum sought for a solution to the inconveniences and difficulties being faced by the people due to the alleged ill-maintained facility and its unsuitable location.

“Most conflicts between piggery operators and neighbours are related to odour, noise, dust, flies and rodents, pathogens or visual amenity. The unscientific burial of waste in the piggery courtyard coupled with the dumping of filth in the adjoining agricultural lands have polluted groundwater, leading to well water pollution in the locality and also making it difficult for cultivators to cultivate agricultural produce,” the forum claimed.

“We request you on behalf of the local people of the area to take upon the matter with the concerned authorities by summoning them for immediate as well as long term redressal of the aforesaid problem,” it added.
