West Garo Hills DC warns against polluting water bodies, harming forests and wildlife

 TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh has issued an order prohibiting various activities of people in the district which harm water bodies, forests and wildlife.

The order which was issued on Monday prohibited random extraction of stone and sand from water bodies like rivers and streams, the rampant felling of trees from catchment areas and deforestation near water bodies and reserve forests including the killing of wild animals.

Dumping of soil, dirty and contaminated water, faecal matter and waste of any kind into water bodies and source of rivers and streams adjoining laboratories and hospitals including, bazaar areas have also been prohibited.

The order also prohibited the dumping of biomedical waste, used swabs, cotton rolls and other laboratory waste and outputs into streams and water bodies, excessive use of water for slaughter houses, markets, service stations, rural and urban haats and market areas and the unauthorized setting up of saw mills especially, in the plain belt areas and Tura Town.

A directive in this regard to prepare a joint action plan for enforcing the order has also been given to the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police and the Divisional Forest Officer of East, South and South West Garo Hills districts.

“Individuals and vested interests violating the order shall attract penal provisions of section 188 of the Indian Penal Code for deliberate violation of the prohibitory order,” the order which comes into immediate effect warned.
