SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) general secretary, Robertjune Kharjahrin has raised a concern on the influx of tribals to Meghalaya from other states in the North East in addition to non-tribals’ influx from other states and Bangladesh.

He spoke to reporters after meeting the PHE Minister Samlin Malniang to apprise the latter on the need for bringing legislation and implementation for strong and effective laws for all round protection and promotion of rights of the indigenous people of the state.

He said influx of tribal from other states should be discouraged and the system of issuing work permits for non-indigenous tribals should be put in place.

Kharjahrin said the issue of influx should be seen from both sides- the tribal influx and that of non-tribals.

The organisation has reiterated the demand for Inner Line Permit (ILP) and a need for government to come up with a National Register of Citizens (NRC) as the one is being updated in Assam with 1971 as the cut off year
