House looted
Shillong: Miscreants looted the house of Mitra Das at Oakland, Shillong on Monday when she went to fetch her daughter from school around 2.15pm. The robbers decamped with Rs15,000 and 33gm worth of gold jewellery. A complaint was lodged with the police. Investigation is on. (Contributed by Kanika Nath)
NEIGRIHMS director to seek review of Group B status
SHILLONG: DM Thappa, the director of NEIGRIHMS, has said he would request the Centre to review the decision to keep the hospital under Group B institutions. Congratulating doctors and non-medical staff of the hospital for the Kayakalp Award, Thappa stressed the need for keeping up the good work. NEIGRIHMS topped the list of Group B hospitals and institutions.

FIR for using poison to catch fish
SHILLONG: The District Administration of Ri Bhoi has filed a police complaint after residents of Tyrso village gathered on the Umiam River bank for community fishing by using poisonous roots. The incident happened on April 20 around 10 am. Ri Bhoi District authorities along with police, tried to stop the 500-odd villagers but they failed to comply. In this connection, D. Kharshiing, , EAC, Ri Bhoi has lodged an FIR at Umiam Police Station.

YWCA, Shillong observes
Earth Day, foundation day
SHILLONG: The YWCA observed Earth Day as well as YWCA Day at Fair Haven Hostel on Bivar Road on Sunday. The programme was chaired by Dr Julie Lyngwa, who is one of the Board members of YWCA Shillong. President of YWCA Meba-ailang Kharkongor and Amy Rangad, the adviser, addressed the gathering. Rangad mentioned that the World Young Women’s Christian Association is a movement working for the empowerment, leadership and rights of women and girls in more than 120 countries. YMCA lauded the decision to award death penalty to rapists of children below 12 years.

Electoral literacy training held in state
TURA/NONGSTOIN: Training and awareness programmes on electoral literacy were held in Tura and Nongstoin on Monday. In Tura, the training was given by State Level Master Trainers and resource persons Brenda Lee Pakyntein, Shanborlay Warjri and Aaron S Warjri. In Nongstoin, students, teachers and lecturers, among others, participated in the programme.

Special Mission Indradhanush launched
SHILLONG: The first round of the Special Intensified Mission Indradhanush Programme was launched in Mawphlang (East Khasi Hills) and Ampati (South West Garo Hills), besides other parts of the state, on Monday. In Mawphlang, local MLA SK Sunn launched the central programme at Mawngap Dorbar Hall. He informed that 283 villages have been selected in the district for the mission with the objective of achieving 90 per cent coverage for children below two years and pregnant women. The first round is from April 23-27, second round from May 21-25 and the third round from June 18-22. There are 54 immunisation sessions at all the identified sites in South West Garo Hills district to be covered in the first round. The deputy commissioner had also sent out appeal letters to all the nokmas and gaonburas seeking their “cooperation and coordination” for the programme to be a success. In Nongstoin, the programme was launched by the district medical and health officer at Civil Hospital.

Monitoring committee holds meet in Tura
TURA: The District Planning and Monitoring Committee on Monday held a meeting at the office chamber of the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner with an aim to discuss and solve inter-departmental problems and clear misunderstandings on issues that cropped up while implementing schemes which are convergence in nature. DRDA Project Director, A M Sangma, TMB CEM, S B Marak, Block Development Officers and heads of various departments in the district were present during the meeting. In view of media reports of quarterly visits of State Cabinet Ministers who would also hold District Coordination meetings, Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh, who is also the Chairman of the Committee, directed all departments to prepare and submit power point presentation about the profile of the department, status of financial prospect, ongoing schemes, including photographs and vision document which would be prepared by compiling the reports of all departments.

Shad Suk Mynsiem concludes in SWKHD
Mawkyrwat: Hundreds of people from South West Khasi Hills district celebrated Shad Suk Mynsiem at Madan Shad in Mawlangwir village, Mawkyrwat on Monday marking the harvesting season. The two-day Shad Suk Mynsiem which concluded on Monday was organised by the Seng Khasi South West Khasi Hills in collaboration with the Seng Khasi Mawlangwir. Local MLA, RL Tongkhar, local MDC, Hadrian Lyngdoh, Deputy Commisioner, I. Laloo, Superintendent of Police, HG Lyngdoh, Manager of Sankur, L Shangdiar, headman of Mawlangwir and leaders of Seng Khasi from Shillong also attended the festival. More than 300 men and young women from the district participated in dance. Young girls wore silk dresses and were decked in ornaments of gold and silver while men wore silk dhotis, waist-coats, plumed turbans and ornaments. The girls danced in the center while the males danced around them to represent protection for the family and the community. The celebration ended with the lowering of the flag by the chief guest, Rgh. Spiton Kharakor on Monday.
