WILLIAMNAGAR: Marcuise Marak has attributed his victory to the Congress’s “dual candidates” strategy, besides the wind of change that is blowing in the state and the electorate’s faith in Conrad Sangma.
A jubilant and victorious Marak interacted with reporters at the deputy commissioner’s office here after the results were announced on Tuesday.
Marak said the clandestine support given to Independent candidate Sengbath Marak by a section of Congress leaders only added to the advantage of his candidature.
“Yes, it is true that there were two candidates supported by the Congress in this election. But it didn’t work for them,” said Marak as he echoed Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s claims.
With Marak taking the trophy home, the Congress loses another bastion.
“Today’s victory has come about because people of Williamnagar wanted a change and have reposed their faith in the NPP under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma,” said Marak.
The weather god’s threat of playing truant failed to deter several hundreds of NPP supporters who blocked the road outside the counting hall. Every time an announcement was made over the public address system, the supporters erupted in joy.
“People of Williamnagar were yearning for a change. They want to see better infrastructure, particularly roads, schools, health and sufficient water supply. I will try and fulfil their aspirations,” said Marak.
