TURA: William A Sangma, an under trial prisoner who escaped from the Tura Civil Hospital while undergoing treatment for an illness in March this year has finally given himself up in North Garo Hills.

William surrendered before North Garo Hills SP, Dr Sacheng Marak at Resubelpara in the presence of other police officials, Church leaders and family members.

According to police, William was picked up early in the morning from his wife’s residence at Kinangaon Village in Boko, Assam after family members coerced him to surrender and contacted Church leaders and a member of a peace committee in Resubelpara. Police were soon informed of the development who took custody of William in their presence.

William had escaped from the Tura Civil Hospital after he, along with another prisoner had tried to overpower a guard and snatch his service revolver. William took his opportunity to escape during the scuffle between the guard and his accomplice, and has since been on the run until his surrender on Sunday. His accomplice was not so lucky and caught during the escape bid.
