One held, another absconding as WJH records rise in POCSO cases

JOWAI: One person has been arrested and another accused is absconding in connection with separate cases under the POCSO Act in West Jaintia Hills.
Jowai police arrested a person identified as Sanki Ksoo on Monday for abducting and sexually assaulting a minor boy.
According to police, the incident took place around 9 pm on Sunday.
A case under the POCSO Act was registered against the accused.
Ksoo is in judicial custody now.
On the same day, another case was reported from Khliehtyrshi, Moopyllaitsyiar. A 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by Deibor Talang (36) since 2014. A case was registered under the POCSO but the accused is absconding.
“Efforts are being made to arrest him,” the SP said.
West Jaintia Hills has witnessed a rise in crime against children with 17 cases under the POCSO Act being reported in the last five months.
District SP Vivek Syiem said three cases have been charge-sheeted and 14 are being investigated.
Thirteen persons have been arrested this year for sexual offences against children.

 Awareness held
JOWAI: A one-day awareness programme on child rights & protection and POCSO Act was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Secondary School, Lamin under Amlarem Sub-Division, West Jaintia Hills.
The office of the District Child Protection Unit along with students from Martin Luther Christian University staged role play and short acts to generate awareness and better understanding on child rights and POCSO Act.
Social Worker, DCPU, Jowai, H Challam, spoke on the Integrated Child Protection Scheme and Juvenile Justice Act while W Ksoo, Legal cum Probation Officer, DCPU, spoke on POCSO Act.
