SHILLONG: The State Cabinet has approved the proposal for setting up of the Directorate of Food Processing in the state under the Agriculture department.
Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday said the decision was taken as several produces like oranges, pineapples, potatoes and tomatoes are grown abundantly in the state but go to waste in the absence of proper infrastructure. According to Tynsong, the directorate will look after the food processing units and the government would encourage private parties and entrepreneurs to set up food processing units in the state.
Tynsong said that the financial implication in the creation of the Directorate is minimal and government would deploy officers from different departments having knowledge of food processing to run the directorate.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet has also approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Health Service Rules, 1990 related to the promotion of doctors.
