NONGSTOIN: The students of a school in West Khasi Hills will have to use umbrellas when it rains during class hours since there are no roofs.
The principal of the Sibsing Memorial Government Higher Secondary School at Nongpyndeng R. Khongwang informed this to Nongstoin MLA Macmillan Byrsat during his visit to the School on Wednesday.
Byrsat, accompanied by D.Rani SDO PWD Building, Nongstoin reviewed the infrastructure and educational system of the school.
The principal of the school told Byrsat that the school is currently in a bad condition due to the absence of fencing.
She also said that the roofs of many of the school classrooms were damaged and that students would have to use umbrellas during classes.
During the inspection, Byrsat expressed his displeasure over the absence of fencing, proper toilet facilities and the pitiful condition of classrooms.
Byrsat later assured the staff and the students that he would extend his support to the school and issued instructions to the SDO for taking appropriate action and to immediately send a proposal to the government.
The MLA also added that the school was among the oldest schools in the district which had been constructed since the Assam Government but was later was handed over to the Meghalaya Government.
The land was donated by the Syiem of Hima Nongstoin during the tenure of Sibsing Syiem. He said that he would discuss the matter with the Chief Minister in order to come up with an early solution.
