Absenteeism, proxy teachers worry GH youth body
SHILLONG: The Tikrikilla branch of the A’chik Youth Council (AYC) has raised concern over proxy attendance by teachers and skewed ration of students and teachers, among other things, in rural schools. In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, the organisation said during their visit to several schools in remote areas, the members found the prevalence of the practice of giving fake attendance. The AYC members also found that due to truancy of teachers, many students are compelled to shift to other schools located at a distance. In some cases, teachers attend school only twice a year during examinations, parents and students have informed AYC. There were also cases of teachers “outsourcing” their duties to proxies and splitting the salary. “In some schools, the number of teachers exceeds the number of pupils according to yearly enrolments,” the statement read. Students in many schools cannot read and write in mother tongues despite completing upper primary section, which “shows lack of commitment, sense of accountability and innovation in such schools”, AYC said. Textbooks have not reached many schools even as mid-term examinations are nearing. AYC urged the Education Department to “adopt innovative ways” to tackle the problems.
