NONGPOH: The KSU on Friday halted stone mining at Umiam river in Ri Bhoi.
The stone mining was allegedly run by Sher Kharkongor of Madanrting.
KSU Umktieh Unit president, Augustine Nongrum informed that illegal stone mining is rampant along the banks of Umiam river near Umsarang village adjacent to Umktieh and Khapmara village in Bhoirymbong area.
Nongrum alleged that Kharkongor uses heavy machinery equipment to mine stones from Umiam causing severe damage to the river and affecting its scenic beauty.
In this connection, the KSU leader also issued a warning against individuals involved in illegal mining activities and said that the Union will not hesitate to take action against them.
