SHILLONG: The Sikh leaders from Delhi, who met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday, suggested the formation of a peace committee to douse the Shillong unrest.
The Akali Dal leaders also suggested the formation of a joint committee to be headed by the chief minister as the chairman to deal with the demand for shifting the Punjabi Lane residents.
In response, the chief minister said the first priority of the government will be to form a peace committee followed by a joint panel. “We will examine the relevant documents and the matter cannot be solved in the street as there is a dispute,” the chief minister said.
Sangma said legal help will be sought to settle the matter.
Asked about the demand to shift the residents of Punjabi Lane, Akali Dal leaders said, “We are here for over 200 years. We feel that a joint committee under the chairmanship of the chief minister will be able to deal with the issue of settlement of people at Punjabi Lane.”
