SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations has expressed grave concern over the prevailing law and order in the city and its adjoining areas for the past 4-5 days.
In a statement released by the union on Monday, it said the ongoing violence is affecting the livelihood of residents, especially daily labourers, farmers, ailing persons, students, small-time traders and others, irrespective of caste, creed, community and religion.
“The incidents taking place are unfortunate and unwarranted, causing extreme hardships and inconvenience for everyone,” the statement read.
Pointing out that the closure of Iewduh is resulting in huge and irrecoverable losses of perishable items, the association said prices of essential commodities are rising abruptly. Education and economic activities have come to a standstill affecting life and usual activity of all peace loving citizens, it added.
The union also made an appeal to everyone to maintain peace and to avoid spreading rumours. They also urged the state government to take wise and concrete measures to contain the situation and show exemplary determination in punishing trouble-makers.
