SHILLONG: Thirteen rioters among more than 50 arrested were released on bail on Friday by a local court.
Police had arrested several protesters since May 31 for pelting stones and damaging public and private properties. Though there was demand to release the rioters unconditionally, the chief minister had made it clear that only the innocent would be let free.
The rioters were arrested from different parts of the city and many FIRs have been filed by police personnel against the agitators for causing injuries to them.
The agitators, most of them in their twenties and a few were teenagers, were armed with catapults, iron rods, stones and petrol bombs. Some protesters also tried to defy the curfew at Umsohsun. Some agitators burnt a pole at Motphran on which a CCTV was mounted. A complaint was lodged by the CCTV operator.
Among the arrested also include a seventeen year old juvenile.
According to police reports, some of the protesters who were arrested hail from Damsite Nongsder, Lawsohtun Block-5 and Lumparing (Kynjat Futbol).
