TURA: A day after Garo organizations gheraoed the GHADC complex in Tura and demanded the removal of a non-Garo MDC from the post of a chairman, normalcy remains with no untoward incidents having been reported from any part of the Garo Hills region.
Security has been tight in sensitive places in the wake of Friday’s incident when Shyamnagar MDC Sofiur Rahman was asked by protestors to step down from the position of chairman of the forest advisory committee.
“Situation is normal and we have set up peace committees and strict vigil is in place with special emphasis on vulnerable areas,” said west Garo Hills district SP Dr MGR Kumar.
The district police chief said that meetings with peace committees have also taken place to prevent rumour mongers from inciting trouble.
The shutdown of the internet services throughout Garo Hills from Friday afternoon appears to have had a negative impact on rumour mongers who have been unable to spread false reports and create fear and confusion.
Authorities inform that internet services will be restored as soon as it becomes clear normalcy is here to stay.
Having witnessed the large scale trouble that broke out in Shillong, last week, where the flames of hatred were stoked through social media by vested interest groups, in the Garo Hills the government acted swiftly to prevent a repeat clamping down on the internet service and ensuring normal life continued without any disruption.
