23 arrested for Assam lynching, 22 for rumour mongering

GUWAHATI  :Assam police have so far arrested total 23 persons for their involvement in lynching of two youths from Guwahati – Nilotpol Das (29) and Abhijit Nath (30) – at Panjuri under Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong district on Thursday night. The youth were killed after being suspected at child lifters, thanks to rumour mongering in the social media about ‘child lifters on the prowl in the state.

The incident has triggered mass spontaneous protests all over the state forcing the police to gear up vigil as well as mount surveillance on the social media to prevent rumour mongering. The state police has assigned an Additional Director General to supervise the operation to monitor  social media while Chief Minister and Home Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has warned off stern action against those found guilty of circulating rumours in social media with intention of creating disturbance in the state.

Assam Police have so far arrested 22 persons for resorting to circulation of rumours in the social media during the last two days. They are identified as : Dipak Khound, Dibyajyoti Saikia, Simanta Terang, , Subhangkor Chakraborty, Mridupaban Muktiar, Madhurjyamandita  Barua,, Anjumom Ronie,, Pritom Das,, Mousham Saikia, Satyajit Debnath, , Bitu Paul,, Manabjyoti Bora, Subhrajit Sharma,, Pradip Das,, Raktimraj Roy,, Gaurav Saha,, Srikanta Saha,, Sahnur Ahmed, Imran Hussain,, Isfakul Haque, , Bulbul Hussain and  Bhupendra Terang.
