SHILLONG: Governor Ganga Prasad on Thursday urged the public to take part in blood donation camps and save lives by donating blood to the poor and the needy.
Addressing a programme held at Raj Bhavan to mark ‘World Blood Donor Day’, the governor said society as a whole should contribute to the noble cause and also allayed fear about the misconception that donating blood can affect the health of an individual.
“Blood donation is good for health and can prevent heart disease among the people,” said Prasad.
The governor stated that the highlight of this year’s media campaign would be engagement with the social media platforms through the initiative called ‘RaktDaan’ India for which a Facebook page with the tagline -‘Raktdaan, Kar ke dekho accha lagta hain’ was created by the National Blood Transfusion Council.
Earlier, Dr R Allya, Deputy Director DHS(PI) and Member Secretary of the State Blood Transfusion Council spoke on the importance of blood donation.
Every year on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and to thank blood donors for their noble act.
The campaign for this year’s World Blood Donors Day aims to highlight stories of people whose lives have been saved through blood donation as a way of motivating regular blood donors to continue giving blood and to motivate people in good health to take up the cause.
The governor also felicitated the voluntary blood donor organisations and the regular voluntary blood donors during the occasion. Students from different Nursing Schools also presented various performances.
The theme for this year’s World Blood Donor Day is ‘Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life’.
