SHILLONG: The State Police is yet to make any arrests of the handlers of social media for spreading misinformation campaign about the death of the assaulted youth in the city on May 31.
The police said the posts had created panic and resulted in the gathering of large crowd at night near Iew Mawlong.
A police officer said on Thursday that the cyber wing of the police is working on details as to who were the people behind the misinformation campaign on social media.
The official admitted that in the absence of trained manpower and non-availability of latest equipment, the police have to work hard to find out the source of wrong social media campaign.
The government had to restrict the use of mobile internet since May 31 due to this.
A Home Department official said Meghalaya, like a few other states, is finding it difficult to solve many cyber crimes.
“Since the crimes have taken new dimensions, we have to upgrade the existing facilities,” the official added.
