SHILLONG: Mawlai MLA, PT Sawkmie on Friday met Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma with a demand to upgrade Mawlai constituency into a full-fledged civil sub-division.

Sawkmie during the meeting said that Mawlai is one of the largest areas of the city with a unique combination of urban and rural settlements.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Sawkmie said that the Chief Minister had assured that he would send the officers to the area for necessary survey to see if the idea was feasible or not.

“Only a civil sub-division can do justice to ensure balanced and equitable development and bridge the gap between two,” he said while informing that as per  2011  census, the total  population of Mawlai is 64021  with  12394  households.

He also said that Mawlai had institutes like NEHU  where students from the country and beyond are rushing for  admissions and since it is the entry point for Shillong city, the area creates the first and last impression about the city and the districts.
