Shillong jail exceeds its capacity

SHILLONG: The Shillong District Jail has exceeded the capacity of inmates lodged as there are 390 inmates as on February 8 as against the official capacity of 150.
As per an RTI filed by CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing, the jail population is shown as 390 (376 –male, 14-female) while the official capacity is 150 (135-male and 15-female). The number of prisoners exceeding as on February 8 is 240.
Further the Director General of Prisons, Meghalaya said no juveniles were imprisoned in the jail in 2016 and 2017.
The RTI further revealed there are 22 Under Trial Prisoners (UTPs) as on January 31 who have been granted bail by the Court but not having sureties.
