SHILLONG: The ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) led by People’s Democratic Front (PDF) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has increased its strength to 28 members after the Congress MDCs extended their support to the PDA executive committee led by CEM PN Syiem.

The Congress MDCs sent a letter of support which bore the signatures of Kimfa S Marbaniang, Donevan Wanlang, Lamphrang Blah and Process T Sawkmie on June 14 to Syiem, who was a Congress rebel and currently chairman of PDF.

The coalition partners in the PDA are PDF, Congress, UDP, NPP, HSPDP and one independent MDC. Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) MDC, Adelbert Nongrum is not supporting the PDA.

Speaking to reporters, Syiem said the support given by the MDCs was crucial at a time when discussions on important issues of MUDA, Sweepers’ Lane (Iew Them Metor) were on.

He expressed gladness that the strength of the PDA has increased to 28 in a House consisting of 29 members.

On the other hand, Syiem urged Nongrum, the lone fence sitter to join hands with the EC to strengthen the EC to ensure a number of issues are taken up for discussion.
