SHILLONG: Various NGOs have condemned the murder of a three week old baby boy at Mission Compound on Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the North East Network (NEN) said that the increase in cases of heinous crimes against women and children have left a sense of fear and insecurity in all members of the community.
Iohlynti, the one stop centre for women at Ganesh Das Hospital run by NEN has registered 823 cases till date. Domestic violence accounts for 350 of these registered cases, said NEN.
The organisation said stern action should be taken against the accused.
“The accused should not be granted bail, especially since he has threatened to murder the other family members and the courts should provide swift justice to the mother and deal with the case in a sensitive manner taking into consideration the trauma the mother is going through.”
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing has also expressed shock over the murder of the baby allegedly by the mother’s ex-husband.
According to the relatives of the victim, the accused Clarence Jason Rajee had managed to climb up to the terrace of the house and made his way down to his ex- wife’s room between 1:00am and 1:30am on Tuesday . He then attacked her and left her bleeding and weak as she had had an operation when the child was delivered, the CSWO said.
The accused carried the child to the terrace and allegedly broke the child’s limbs, according to a relative, who saw the body of the child before dumping the baby in a bucket of water, the CSWO said.
The post mortem was conducted and the relatives and the police are awaiting the postmortem report.
The organisation has demanded strong action against the accused.
“No bail should be granted to the person as there is fear from the relatives of the deceased as he had cautioned that he will harm other members of the family as well”.
