SHILLONG: The much-awaited Umsning Bypass, an integral part of the Umiam-Jorabat four lane road, will be opened for traffic by July 30.
An official from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said the road will be ready by July 15 following which a safety audit would be done.
NHAI sources maintained that the work on the bypass was delayed by contractors coupled with the rain and the manpower issues the state because of the recent law and order breakdown.
Currently, one lane of the bypass has been opened for traffic.
Reacting to a query whether the four lane road would be extended to Shillong, the official said there was no such plan as of now.
“There is hardly any traffic towards Shillong side and it all depends on passengers count. If the traffic increases, necessary action will be taken,” the official said.
On the contrary though, many people who take the road from the city have a common complain that it took a long time to exit as well as enter Shillong city since there is always a huge traffic right from Mawiong and hundreds of vehicles get stuck in traffic jams and snarls.
The NHAI official informed that a new project to construct the Jowai-Ratacherra road into a four- lane project was on the anvil and it would be
) implemented by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.
The total project cost of the 101-km road project including land acquisition is Rs 1464.5 crore.
The letter of allotment was issued for preparation of the detailed project report to Global Infra Solutions as a joint venture with Krishna Techno Consultant in March this year.
