Umsning MLA felicitated
SHILLONG: Balawan College felicitated Umsning MLA Jason Sawkmie Mawlong at the Freshers’ Meet cum Felicitation programme held at the Common Facility Centre of Edu-Wel Mission Society, in Umsning on Thursday. As part of the felicitation and as a token of appreciation, a memento of the College was presented to the MLA. Jason, who is also the Chairman, Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation Limited encouraged the students to work hard and give time to achieve their goals, adding that ‘the world is tough and so you have to strive ahead’. He appreciated the initiative taken by Edu-Wel Mission Society which is the sponsoring body of Balawan College. The event was organised to welcome, encourage and give direction to new comers. D. R Ryntathiang, Chairman Umsning Town Committee, Sr. A. Sohkhlet RNDM, Principal St. Michael’s School, J. Kurbah, Principal, Fr. T. K Ngapkynta, Secretary GB, members of the governing body, parents attended the programme.

BSF seizes two gold biscuits
Shillong: BSF troops seized two gold biscuits weighing 100 grams each and worth of Rs 6.5 lakhs at Nayabazar, East Khasi Hills on Saturday. The BSF spotted a suspected smuggler at the Indo-Bangla border and tried to stop him for interrogation to which the suspect fled and escape to Bangladesh. On escaping, a packet containing the two gold biscuits fell on the ground and was seized by the security forces. The BSF informed that the smuggler came from Bangladesh. The haul was handed over to the concerned authority.

Womens’ panel holds legal awareness meet
Shillong: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW), supported by the National Commission for Women, New Delhi organised a one-day legal awareness programme at Block Development Office, Mawryngkneng, East Khasi Hills on Saturday. Theilin Phanbuh Chairperson, MSCW and Padmashree graced the occasion as the chief guest in the presence of I Tariang, Member Secretary, MSCW, Annie Sohtun, Coordinator, MSCW, besides representatives of Dorbar Shnong, women groups, teachers and students from various schools of Mawryngkeng area. Phanbuh said that the objective of the Commission is to seek justice for women, safeguard their rights, and promote women’s empowerment.  She reiterated that legal literacy is crucial and women should know about their rights, and the Commission will continue to conduct leadership training and sensitisation programme across the State for women, students and parents to impart legal awareness to women and girls, regarding their legal rights and duties.Considering the increasing crime against women, Phanbuh urged Dorbar Shnongs, NGOs and women groups to work together with the Commission to protect the rights of women so as to enable them to achieve equality in all spheres of life and to live with dignity. A technical session was held during the programme.
