SHILLONG: NPP may be in trouble if the coordination committee of the political parties at the Ranikor level decides to put up a common candidate from either UDP’s Pius Marwein or PDF’s P.N Syiem to contest the Ranikor by-poll.
A meeting of the Ranikor units of several political parties held on Sunday decided to form a coordination committee to decide on a single candidate.
Sources said the Ranikor units of UDP, BJP, Congress and the NPP members who had supported Donkupar Massar in the last February polls and the PDF have decided to come together to put up a consensus candidate.
“The intention is to have only one candidate to take on M.M Danggo to ensure his defeat, a source who is part of the upcoming coordination committee, said.
The committee will meet within July 10 to take a final decision on the consensus candidate.
However, the state leadership of BJP has already supported the NPP candidate, while the UDP leadership is keen to put up Marwein.
Congress has also made it clear that the party will put up a candidate.
