SHILLONG: A day after the UDP Ranikor circle made it clear it would approach Congress and other political parties on its own to garner support for party candidate Pius Marwein in the Ranikor by-poll, UDP president, Donkupar Roy said the party would meet shortly to discuss the matter.
“As of now this matter is at the constituency level,” he said.
The party’s Ranikor circle had also asserted that it would not ‘allow’ the high command to ‘interfere’ with their decision. Marwein is contesting against NPP candidate and five-time MLA, M.M Danggo.
Meanwhile, UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said the party leaders will sit for a coordination committee meeting on July 10 to discuss the current political scenario in Ranikor.
“We want to win the election. We have a fair chance of winning the Ranikor seat”, he stated.
Asked whether the party was willing to shake hands with other political parties for the by-poll, he said the UDP will solicit support from anybody — even disgruntled Congress members — to ensure Danggo’s defeat.
Commenting on the move by the Ranikor UDP circle, Mawthoh said, “We work in close coordination at the state, district and even the constituency level and there has to be consultations before any decision is taken.”
