SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma has assured MLA from Mawsynram, HM Shangpliang on Thursday that the state government will consider the demand for a civil sub-division at Mawsynram as per availability of funds.
“The Chief Minister said that Mawsynram Block deserves to be upgraded to Civil Sub-Division. However, he said that it needs to be studied further as the state is facing fund constraints,” the MLA said after his meeting with the Chief Minister.
Shangpliang informed that Sangma told the delegation of Mawsynram Civil-Sub Division Demand Committee that there were two others such areas, Patharkhmah and Ranikor , that deserved to be upgraded to Civil Sub-division as the places still lacked in development.
In the memorandum, the committee said that the Mawsynram Block was the oldest and remote block of our state but one of the important tourist destinations in the state.
There are around 170 villages within the vicinity of Mawsynram Block and the total population of all these villages comes to around 80,000. The longest route connecting of villages like Makhali, Ryngku & Dholai village to the C & RD Block is about 55 KM. The city headquarter is far off from these villages.
Most of the locals are cultivators and lose valuable time which they could spend in cultivation, if they have to travel all the way to Shillong for official works.
The committee stated that if Mawsynram Block was upgraded to Civil Sub-Division, it would not only cater to the needs of the people of Mawsynram Block and but also open employment avenues for local youths.
