SHILLONG: The 67th plenary of the North Eastern Council to be chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the city on Monday will follow up the need to grant more funds to NEC to complete its committed liabilities towards development of the area and also to enable it to go for new projects as per the mandate given to the Centre.
The meet will also be attended by DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh, CMs and governors of the northeastern states.
Earlier, a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs had suggested the need to provide more funds to NEC.
An official source said the second Administrative Reforms Commission had also recommended that NEC should implement development projects under non-lapsable central pool of resources.Though the Centre had approved the extension of the NEC schemes till March 2020, sectors like power, irrigation and flood control, water supply, sports, school education both primary and secondary and healthcare have been left out from the council’s purview.
Earlier, the schemes for skill development and viability gap funding for airlines were transferred to the Ministry of Skill Development and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, respectively.
An official statement said all the projects funded by NEC will now be identified by a Project Identification Committee (PIC) consisting of secretaries of DoNER and
NEC and chief secretary of the concerned state.
Another focus of the two-day meeting is to ensure that the pending projects are completed without further delay.
